How to really mess up your code using one of Eclipse's new features

I could have called this "the dangers of IDEs" or "brainless programming" or "write tests before you start changing code"... anyway, you get the picture...

Eclipse has a nice feature which tells you when a local variable is never read after it's been initialized. The thing is... I mistook that for meaning "the variable is useless" so I sometimes removed the line where this variable was set...

Yeah... well, what if your method changes state somewhere... you've basically messed up your code... great !

sigh...

Edit (later on...) : Everbody chill out... I never meant to say it was Eclipse's or the IDE's fault. Actually, I take full blame for making that mistake. I mentionned Eclipse because that's the IDE I'm using.
I was just sharing that mistake with the rest of the community... surely I will not be the only one making it !

I don't see how this is Eclipse's fault! Intellij IDEA has the same refactoring feature. PDM and, I think it is Jloppy, will also flag this as warning. The idea is point the developer to the troubled spot for review, much like spell-checking errors are suggestions for review. We all know that spell-checking is hit or miss, but you don't blame wordprocessor.

Blaming Eclipse for this problem is like blaming a hammer for smashing your thumb. It not Eclipse fault that your code was damaged any more than it is the hammer's fault if you hit your thumb.

Use Local History to revert to the old code. No harm done, move on and quit whining.

I think issue is more with the title than the article itself. The problem is that at first glance it sounds like Eclipse 2.1 has a bug or something that could cause you to lose your work. I know I was alarmed at first, then I read the article. I have to say I was a little upset, when it wasn't Eclipse fault. Sorry, if I you felt I was a bit harsh.

As a suggestion, I would have place the under Eclipse Tip: Use xxx feature sparingly. I would then place an example of what caused you get into a problem. I provide suggestions on how get out the mess. I use both Local History and CVS for this exact reason.
