Getting rid of ads & popups without software !

I found this idea of a kazaa lite website on how to get rid of ads & popups : adding entries to the hosts file !. This is brilliant.

All you have to do is add entries such as these

127.0.0.1 ad.adsmart.net
127.0.0.1 ad.ca.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ad.de.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ad.es.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ad.fr.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ad.free6.com
127.0.0.1 ad.it.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ad.iwin.com

and ads can no longer get served from there !

I have been surfing a bit since doing this and it seems like many sites are now serving ads from their own domain so this won't work all the time :(

Follow-up: I got a bit carried away : it won't prevent popups... it will just prevent them from displaying anything...

I started doing this over a year ago: you're right it isn't perfect, but it really cuts things down. The best way to get rid of popups is to install Mozilla and instruct it to disallow "unrequested new windows".

Does this mozilla installation also slow down the PC?

PanicWare's Popup Stopper works great for me. I haven't noticed any adware riding in on it... yet.

Mozilla seemed to have slowed down my PC but Panic Ware is working great except it wont let me open my email page. Have to start without enabling it, then enable. Also writing my own notepad generated webpages, it wont allow me to view my page in IE without doing the same.

If you want to open a page, just press the "shift" key at the same time you click on the link and PanicWare will open it. :)
